Buckling Up that Baby Bump

For a pregnant women, what once was simple now gets a little more complicated. You probably never put a thought into buckling up – it's just something you do; an automatic motion when you get in your car. But as your baby starts to grow and your belly gets bigger, what once was a easy task is now an uncomfortable reminder that it's not just about your safety anymore.

The obvious question: Should you buckle up when pregnant? Of course! A seat belt can protect you and your baby in a car accident. According to our friends at the March of Dimes, nearly 170,000 car crashes involving pregnant women happen every year, so it's important for moms at all stages of pregnancy to wear safety belts.

So, what's the best way to buckle up with a baby in your belly?

  1. Adjust your seat for space and comfort. The National Highway Traffic Safety Associationrecommends 10-inches between your belly and the wheel. You should continue to adjust to maintain that gap as your belly gets bigger throughout your pregnancy. You want to adjust your seat as far back as possible, but still be able to reach the steering wheel and pedals with comfort.
  2. Check the shoulder strap. The shoulder strap should go across your chest between your breasts and off to the side of your belly. Never place the shoulder belt under your arm.
  3. The lap belt should rest under your belly and over your hips. Never place the lap belt across your belly.
  4. Make sure the straps are snug. And adjust the shoulder belt height to fit correctly if that's an option in your vehicle.
  5. Make Frequent Stops. For long trips remember to make frequent stops to stand up, stretch and keep your blood circulating.
